He told me thats what he put in his form too.

What are the numbers for these "tribeless" ones?

Hmmmn, interesting point. Would I have betrayed my ancestors if I said Kenyan?

I distinctly remember the guy in the house, standing by the dinner table. I actually offered the young chap some fruit.

But when he asked my tribe, I paused a moment tooo long. You see I had been weaned off this tribe thing...
- perhaps because some close to me always asked the question next on meeting a stranger
- or because it never mattered when growing up or in school

Well, I capitulated... but Oh, what confusion when he then asked what my wifes tribe is, or children for that matter...

Hypocrites deny their tribes! We are so brain washed that we think having a tribe and a language is a bad thing!
When a scots man says he is scotish that is called nationalism but when an Kenya says he is Luo, Kalenjin, Kikuyu or Kamba that is Tribalism!! What bullshit! Kenya has many tribes which are essentially Nations. The population of Scotland is 5 million thats less than luhyas but being proud of being a Luhya is a Bad thing!
The negative aspect in tribes comes when politicians come into the mix!! That should be stopped there is no reason Tribes should be a divisive aspect of our culture! It can be a source of competition yes but not division!
I am happy to have tribe, to have traditions, to have a culture and to remember those who were there before me.
I am a Kenyan and I have a Tribe!!

@tony stark, well said. The problem with tribe just as with race and religion is when people use it as a basis for stereotyping and looking down on others

I remember before the census the tribe thing was an issue. We were told to say we were kenyans. All those who said they were kenyans were added to No. 1 and No. 2

What does one need to have to be a member of a certain tribe? Is it the name, the language he can speak, the culture he adapts, the environment he grows up in? what exactly?

The reason i ask is because some of the kenyans are so mixed up with this tribe thing that you even cant really tell which tribe's blood you have. For instance, you find a lady whose origin is two mixed families (Embu and kiuk - father) and (Kiuk and maasai - mother) and links up with this dude who is (half buganda and half luhya). Their children speak English and Swahili and are brought up in nairobi (so no inclination to any particular culture. What tribe do you give these children?

...Is the Luo tribe an endangered species. I couldn't believe when it was placed number 4 in the national census. Why am I saying this? Luos are known to be good lovers and many rarely use protection and any family planning methods. What went wrong? Their numbers have drastically fallen over the years and they have been overtaken by other ethnic communities. I know HIV/AIDS has taken its toll in this community. But is this the only reason? Like South Sudan, should the leaders up there urge their people to arm themselves properly...use their guns and airports and all other landing accessories properly...!!!
